Luigi Ballerini is an Italian writer, translator, and food historian, born in 1940 in Milan. He is known for his works on Italian culture and literature, particularly the works of Dante Alighieri.
Ballerini studied at the University of Milan, where he earned degrees in classics and literature. He went on to teach at the universities of California (UCLA), Wisconsin, and Virginia. He has also been a visiting professor at many institutions worldwide, including Yale, Harvard, and the University of Tokyo.
In addition to his academic work, Ballerini has published many books on food and wine, including the seminal work "La Cucina Italiana: The Encyclopedia of Italian Cooking." He has also translated several works of Italian literature into English, including Dante's "The Divine Comedy."
Ballerini has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Italian culture, including the Premio Campiello literary prize in 1998 and the prestigious Dante Medal in 2017.
